Barbara Ann Hengst, age 82, passed away Tuesday December 14, 2021 at York Hospital. Born in York, PA on August 27, 1939, Barbara was the daughter of the late Chester and Louise (Mummert) Knaub. She was the loving wife of Marvin D. Hengst of Red Lion, PA to whom she was married for 61 years. Barbara graduated from York High in 1957. Her first job was at Bowen-McLaughlin, a role that was interrupted by 2 years in Heidelberg, Germany while Marvin served in the US Army. After returning to PA, she worked at S&H Green Stamps for several years. Her primary career involved various roles in the Red Lion Area School District, culminating in the position of classroom aide at Locust Grove Elementary School from which she retired in 2001. Barbara delighted in those she tutored in the classroom, "her kids" as she called them, and seeing them succeed in school. Barbara was an avid reader and loved spending summers at Ocean City, MD. In addition to her husband, Barbara is survived by her daughter Jamie and husband Ji Zhang of Tampa, FL and her son Jeremy and wife Beverly Hengst of Carlisle, PA. Barbara had two grandchildren, Jenna Zhang (and husband Felipe Becerra) of San Francisco, CA and Brett Miller of Newville, PA and one great granddaughter, Makenna Miller. Barbara was preceded in death by her sister, Diane Knaub Schriver. Services will be held privately for the family who have chosen to postpone a celebration of Barbara's life to a later date in 2022 due to the holidays and current pandemic situation.
