Obituary

Barbara A. (Kohler) Burkett of York took the hand of her Lord and Savior on Sunday morning at 4:00 AM when she heard Him call with her loving family by her side at her residence at the age of 80. She was the loving wife of Dewey H. Burkett to who she married on October 5, 1963, celebrating 57 years together. She was born in Red Lion on November 25, 1940 and was the daughter of the late Albert and Evelyn (Mitzel) Kohler. Barbara graduated from Red Lion High School Class of 1958 and then went on to York Hospital School of Nursing, earning her diploma and became a Registered Nurse in 1961. She worked in several hospitals as she moved with her husband being in the military. Her most recent employment was with York Hospital, working as a Clinical #3 nurse in the intensive care unit, specifically with the open-heart patients for 30 years, retiring in 2005. Barbara was a longtime and active member of Advent Lutheran Church in York and a former member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in York. Barbara and Dewey were also members of the Cotillion, Phoenix and Syncopation Dance Clubs of York. Barbara and Dewey had three children, Sharon Lynn Long and her husband Michael of Wake Forest, NC and Philip Todd Burkett and his wife Cathy of Havertown, PA. She also leaves behind her sister, Beverly Lentz and husband Dennis of Red Lion. She was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Thomas Burkett in 1975. She was the loving grandmother of Christopher and Andrew Long and Carly and Sydney Burkett. Cremation will take place with Burg Funeral Home, Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion. A Service to Honor and Praise Barbara's life will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice and Community Care for their kindness and professionalism they showed to Barbara throughout her illness.
