DOVER Betty J. (Koons) Smallwood, 87, entered into rest after a brief illness on Friday, March 18, 2011, at 2:13 a.m. at Providence Place Retirement Community in Dover. She was the wife of James D. Smallwood, who entered into rest March 26, 1988. Betty was born in Chanceford Twp., on December 19, 1923, the daughter of the late Roy C. and Ella N. (Brubaker) Koons. She was self-employed as an in-home caregiver. Betty was a longtime and faithful member of the Friendship Community Church where she loved attending and hosting caregroup meetings. She is survived by a daughter, Karen Spangler and husband, Robert, Jr of Spring Grove; four grandchildren, Dorene Bennett and husband James, and Darren Smallwood, all of Dover, Sabrina Claudio and husband, Juan of York and Wendy Walter and husband, Jason of York New Salem; several great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Richard Smallwood of Dover; and a daughter-in-law, Sally Markey of Florida. She was preceded in death by a son, David Markey; a daughter, Jolene Smallwood; a grandson, Brondell Markey; a great-granddaughter, Katie Bennett; and a brother, Charles Koons. Viewing will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 to 10 a.m. at Burg Funeral Home, Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion. The service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with her pastor, the Rev. John M. Harman, officiating. Burial will be at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be offered to, York Health Foundation, "Cancer Patient Help Fund", 912 S. George St., York, PA 17403; or to AseraCare Hospice, 44 Bowman Rd, York, PA 17404. Family was very important to Betty and she loved spending time with all of them. She was also very fond of traveling to Florida, especially during the cold winter months. She was a very kind and special lady who will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
