Charles W. "Charlie" Howard, of York, entered into God's eternal care at 12:19 pm on Tuesday,February 7, 2023, at WellSpan York Hospital at the age of 75. He was the husband of Laraine K. (Gohn) Howard of York. They were married for 47 years. Charlie was born on June 21, 1947, in York and was the son of the late William and Jesslyn (Forwood) Howard. He was a graduate of the Red Lion High School, class of 1966. Charlie had been employed as a custodian at the Red Lion School District having over 30 years before his retirement in 2006. He was a member of the Water's Edge Church in Craley and was a former member of Bethel United Methodist Church near Shenk's Ferry. He had been a member of the Windsor Lions Club , where he served as President. He was a life member of New Bridgeville Memorial Fire Company of which he was active for many years especially in the capacity of Fire Police, assisting with the annual Craley Days Celebration for many years. He was a former member of the Craley Fire Company. He was also a real estate agent for several years at Dale Elfner Realty in Red Lion. Charlie owned and operated Howard's Craft Shop in Red Lion. He was a skilled craftsman in the art of quilling. He won many ribbons at the York Fair. He and Laraine loved the fair and would often attend multiple times in the ten days. Charlie and Laraine loved to attend auctions and would sell their wares at the Red Lion Antique Center. He loved flowers and gardening and enjoyed going to Stauffer's of Kissel Hill. For several years he had a garden in Maryland with friends that he and Laraine met at Health South Rehabilitation Hospital of York. Prior to his stroke in 2006, he and Laraine took many bus trips, traveling to Virginia, Vermont, and Tennessee, their favorite destination was Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. For many years he and several family members traveled yearly to Penn State for a weekend vacation. Following his stroke, Charlie took on more new interests, collecting old postcards, going to thrift stores and antique shops, doing puzzles, going out for breakfast and dinner with family and friends, and reading, especially his "Archie" comic books, (many thanks to Bill and his staff at Comix Connection). He loved to visit the Country View (Amish) Market in Collinsville. When he wanted to go there, he would always say "I want to go South"! He loved Christmas, making sure the entire house was fully decorated to entertain family and friends. He will also be remembered for his spectacular Halloween display every year. Charlie loved to keep busy and go shopping. Every morning he awoke with a smile and a question, "what are we doing today?" In his memory, when your alarm goes off tomorrow, put on a smile and say, "what are you going to do today?", and see how much better you will feel to start your day. In addition to his loving wife, Laraine, he is survived by his sister, Debbie L.
