Obituary

Cora Sue Herbst, age 79, of Felton, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 26, 2026. Born in Darby, PA, she was the daughter of the late Horace J. and Anna (Fink) Hedges. She was the devoted wife and best friend of Lynn E. Herbst, with whom she shared 55 wonderful years of marriage after they were united on August 8, 1970.

Cora Sue was a graduate of Millersville State College and went on to earn her Master’s Degree in Library Science from Shippensburg State College, as well as her Master’s Degree in Education from Millersville. She dedicated her professional life to the Red Lion Area School District, first serving as an elementary school librarian for 11 years, and later as a second grade teacher for 25 years. She truly loved her students and found great joy in teaching.

A faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church in Red Lion, Cora Sue shared her love of music as a member of the choir. She and Lynn enjoyed many years together as avid antique collectors and were active members of “The Golden Glow of Christmas Past,” often welcoming others into their home to share their collection and attending conferences together. They also cherished traveling, especially to England, Scotland, and Wales. Cora Sue loved her cats and was adored by them.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, George Everett Hedges and Robert Thomas Hedges. She is lovingly remembered by her many friends, colleagues, and former students, whose lives she touched in meaningful ways.

A celebration of Cora Sue’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at Grace Lutheran Church, 220 North Charles Street, Red Lion, with Pastor Wicky Barnes officiating. Interment will follow in Winterstown United Brethren Cemetery. A viewing will be held on Tuesday from 6–8 p.m. at Wagner-Elfner and Burg Funeral Home, 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion, and again on Wednesday from 10–11 a.m. at the church.
