Obituary

Dwight E. Smith, Jr., of Jacobus, died at his home on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at the age of 51.

He was born on March 3, 1973, in York, to the late Dwight E. Smith, Sr. and Sue Starn. Dwight worked as a material handler at Utz, where he was highly regarded for his dedication and respect within the team.

Outside of his professional life, Dwight was an avid motorcyclist with a deep love for adventure. He had an adventurous spirit that led him to travel extensively, visiting every state in the U.S., including Alaska and Hawaii. He enjoyed exploring new places, hiking, and experiencing the great outdoors. Dwight had a special fondness for Nashville, where he cherished his time, and he was equally drawn to the beauty of Colorado, especially the mountains. In Colorado, he nurtured a passion for gardening, cultivating plants in his greenhouses with a green thumb. He also had a connection to the ocean and always felt at peace near the water. Getting Dwight to leave a beach was often a difficult task. Above all, Dwight valued the moments spent with family and friends.

Dwight is survived by his nephews, Douglas Deppen, Jr. of Hellam, Matthew Deppen, and Craig Smith, both of York, as well as his niece, Brandy L. Barnes of Arizona. He was preceded in death by his sister, Melissa L. Sangrey.

Services and burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Wagner-Elfner and Burg Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion, is assisting the family with arrangements.
