Obituary

After years of battling cancer and defying doctors and statistics in the process, Nicky died peacefully at her home, as she wanted, on August 2, 2025, at the age of 82. She was the wife of Christopher Neumann of Delta, PA.

Nicky was born on April 10, 1943, in Baltimore, MD, to the late Clarence and Helen (Roth) Althouse. She grew up in Center Valley, PA, and graduated from Moravian Preparatory School (Bethlehem) in 1960. She married her first husband, Herbert Silverberg, on her 20th birthday and raised two children in La Plata, MD—Deborah (Deb) and David Silverberg. While being a full-time mom, she completed her college education with a bachelor's degree from Antioch University (Baltimore Campus) in Family Counseling. She worked at a local counseling center, first as a volunteer and then as a paid staffer, rising to the position of Director in the mid-1980s.

Several years after divorcing her first husband, she met Chris and married him on September 11, 1982, at the house she had built in La Plata. That home became the family home for Chris, his son Erik, Nicky, Deb, and David.

After becoming empty nesters, Nicky and Chris moved to Peach Bottom Township in the spring of 1988. She worked as a counselor for Cecil County, MD, and later for the Adams-Hanover Counseling Center, seeing clients at the Delta Senior Center both individually and in group settings. For several years, she ran a Wild Birds Unlimited store in Lancaster, PA. Later, she began raising alpacas on the family farm, which she did for twenty years. While the alpacas were both a business and a hobby, horses were Nicky's lifelong passion. She raised, trained, and rode four different horses during her riding career, the last three being Arabians. She was also an avid swimmer and loved to swim in the pond she had built on the farm, and she had an indoor pool built as an attachment to her home in order to swim year-round.

Nicky loved to travel, especially to islands with great beaches. Some of her favorite trips were to the Galápagos Islands, the Greek Islands, Hawaii, Jamaica, and two separate horseback riding trips—one in Ireland and one in France. Her favorite local beach was Assateague, VA. She also had a passion for live theater plays and orchestral concerts.

Nicky is survived by her husband, Chris; her son, David, and his new wife, Mety, of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; and her stepson, Erik Neumann, and his wife, Sunny, of Woodbridge, VA. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Deborah, in October 2019. Her other surviving relatives include her sister, Noel Koulothros of Franklin Lakes, NJ; her grandsons, Kai and Koji Silverberg Shirota, and their mother, Sachiko Shirota, of Palo Alto, CA; her granddaughter, Saja Neumann, of Lubbock, TX; her grandson, Teyon Neumann, of Woodbridge, VA; and Abby and Keionna Satria of Bandung, Indonesia.

She was buried on the family farm on August 5, 2025, with the assistance of Wagner-Elfner and Burg Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Red Lion. The family welcomes donations in Nicky's memory to the Delta Area Community Senior Center, Inc., the Mennonite Central Committee, or Doctors Without Borders.
