This is a day to rejoice, as Eugene "Gene" O. Hilt has left this earthly life and has accepted the hand of his Lord and Savior to begin eternal life on Thursday, December 30, 2021, at 10:27 pm at the age of 93. He was the husband of the late Irene L. (Stabley) Hilt who entered the Lord's kingdom on May 4, 2013.
Gene was born in Lower Windsor Township on November 2, 1928 and was the son of the late Lorenza O. and Helen M. (Mundis) Hilt. Gene worked at the former Caterpillar, Inc. in York for 28 years, retiring in 1983. He was a life member of the Windsor Church of God Church where he was a former Elder, Deacon, Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, President of the Christian Endeavor Society, and head of the building committee. He taught the Bible for over 68 years and was a member of the Gideons and Men for Missions. Gene was a very crafty man who created beautiful treasures for family and friends. He will be remembered by his great sense of humor. He was a social butterfly and he never met anyone who was not a friend forever after. Gene spent the last three years living at the Providence Place Senior Living Facility in Dover. There, he was deemed as the mayor. Part of his duties was to offer support and friendship to new residents, making them feel a warm welcome, and to show them around the building. The staff at the home just loved Gene and he loved them like they were his own family, especially his best buddy, Tony. Gene had two very important missions in life: serving his Lord and Savior and being with his family. He adored his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Irene and Gene had two children, a daughter, Judy M. Eckenrode, of Red Lion, and a son, David E. Hilt and his wife, Joyce, of Apache Junction, AZ. He was the grandfather of Jennifer Hurley (Glen) of Apache Junction, AZ, Melissa A. Burdette (Kirk) of York, Tabatha L. Heilman of West York, and Donald E. Heilman, Jr. (Jennifer) of York, and great grandfather of fifteen and great great grandfather of six. He also leaves his sisters, Miriam I. Warner of Dover, and Janeann Miller of Wellsville, along with nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son in law, Gerald "Lynn" Eckenrode on September 18, 2010, and his two brothers-in-law, Gene Warner and Robert Miller.
A Service of Honor and Praise for Gene will be on Tuesday, January 4th, 2022, at 11 am at Windsor Church of God Church, 1125 Manor Road, Windsor, PA. Viewing will be from 10 to 11 am at the church, with his pastor, Michael C. Walker, officiating. Burial will follow the service in Windsor Church of God Cemetery. Burg Funeral Home, Inc., 134 W.
