Obituary

Evelyn Marie (Brown) Bender, of Airville, entered into God's care on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at 6:30 pm at her residence with family by her side at the age of 97. She was the wife of the late Roy M. Bender who entered into rest on July 25, 1997. She was born in Chanceford Township on January 14, 1921 and was the daughter of the late Roy and Lois Viola (Crawford) Brown. Evelyn was a homemaker and assisted her husband on the family farm. She was a long time member of Guinston United Presbyterian Church in Airville where she taught Sunday School Class for more than 50 years, receiving an award of recognition for that service to the church and was involved with the Missionary Association of the church. Evelyn was the loving mother of two daughters, Donna B. Roller and her husband George of Camp Hill, and Wendy J. Ebersole and James Contino of York and her son in law, David Oberdorff of York. She also leaves 4 grandchildren to cherish her memory, Rebecca L. Roller and husband James Cruz of Mechanicsburg, Ashley K. Oberdorff of Brooklyn, NY, Sarah E. Roller of Mechanicsburg and Brittany L. Oberdforff Mumford and her husband Derek of Arlington, VA. Evelyn is survived by her two sisters, Ferne Waltemyer of York and Grace Frey of Yoe along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Patti S. Oberdorff in 2015, three brothers and 3 sisters. There will be no viewing. A Family Graveside Service of Honor and Praise for Evelyn will be on Friday, June 1st at 10 am at Guinston UP Cemetery, with her pastor, Rev. Daniel R. Moore officiating. Burg Funeral Home, Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion will be assisting the family with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be offered to: Susan G. Evelyn was a very caring mother to her children. She enjoyed working on needle point, gardening and reading poetry. One of her favorite poems was, "The Safe Passage", where He leads me, I can safely go, and in the blest hereafter I shall know, why in His wisdom, He hath led me so. Forever in our hearts.
