Evelyn Jane (Hoffmaster) Evans, of York, left this earthly life behind when she heard her Lord and Savior call her name to go to her eternal home to be with her husband, John R. Evans, Sr. who entered into rest on June 8, 2005. She passed at 2:26 am from Magnolias of Lancaster on Friday, February 5, 2021 at the age of 95, with her daughter, Cindy, sitting by her side and her many other family members joining via Facebook messenger.
Evelyn was born in Lancaster on December 22, 1925 and was the daughter of the late Gabriel and Mazie (Metzler) Hoffmaster. After high school, she attended the Thompson Business School, earning a certificate of completion. She worked at Stauffer Biscuit in York and was the secretary for the former Roland Warner Insurance Agency in Red Lion and was also a clerk at the former Strayer's Store in Winterstown. Along with working outside of the home, Evelyn had seven children that she raised and assisted taking care of others as they needed it. She loved to crochet, and hand made a granny square afghan for each family member throughout her years. Evelyn enjoyed having fun and going to the Hollywood Casino was always a great time. While living with her daughter, she would help with folding care products for T & K Naturals, her daughter's business. But nothing could possibly replace the joy that she had when she was spending time with her family.
Evelyn was fondly known as "Gigi" by her family. She and John had seven children, Joanne L. Arnold and Jerry of Davenport, FL., Deborah A. Maust and Gregory of Naples, FL., John R. Evans, Jr. and Beth of Fenwick Island, DE., Thelma J. Kuhlman and her lifetime partner, and best friend to Gigi, William Gordon of York, George L. Evans and Cindy of York, Cindy J. Grove and Dusty of Felton and Robert W. Evans and Lorraine of Spry. She was grandma to thirteen grandchildren, John Evans III (partner Tiffany Mays), David Arnold (Kathleen), Heather Nesti (Leon), Stacey Whisman (Chuck), Lexi Holmes (Ryan), Christine Thorne (Jason), Christopher Evans (LynDe), Mindy Grove (partner Brian Luzier), Jerry Kuhlman, Shaun Evans (Lindsey), Angela Erb (Shawn), Benjamin Grove (Jeri-Lyn) and Bradley Smith. Twenty-five great grandchildren, John Evans IV, Zachary and Tyler Arnold, Heidi, Richard, and Charles Nesti, Hannah, Audrey, and Lauren Whisman, Jesse Hurley (partner Jasmine Tran), Starr Miller, Hunter Holmes, Katie and Megan Thorne, Ashton and Alec Evans, Dom Francisco (partner Jamie Theodore), Jayda Francisco (husband, Jacob Garrity), KiLee and Maya Kuhlman, Emma and Addison Evans, Landen and Olivia Grove and Justin Smith, and a great great granddaughter, Kinsley Hurley, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Evelyn was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Jerry Kuhlman on April 19,1999, and her five sisters and a brother.
Viewing will be held on Tuesday, February 9th, from 6-8 pm and Wednesday, 9-10 am at Burg Funeral Home, Inc., 134 W. Broadway. A Service of Honor and Praise for Evelyn will begin at 10 am on Wed. at the funeral home with Pastor Sue Olerich, of Locust Grove United Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will take place at Guinston UP Cemetery in Brogue.
All planning to attend the service are asked to please wear a mask and observe social distancing as much as possible while in the funeral home. Please be courteous to those behind you wanting to extend their condolences to the family and keep things moving, during this difficult time with Covid-19 restrictions.
