G. Thomas Smeltzer, of York, entered God's care on Thursday, August 6, at 4 am at Wellspan York Hospital at the age of 83. He was the husband of the late Kay A. (Downs) Smeltzer, with whom he shared 34 years of marriage, prior to her passing on December 8, 2018.
Tom was born in Red Lion on September 24, 1936 and was the eldest son of the late George E. and Mildred (Henderson) Smeltzer. He graduated from Red Lion High School, Class of 1954 and went on to college, earning an associate degree from Penn State Center York in 1956. He worked most of his years as a mechanical draftsman for local York companies and retiring in 1999, after 25 years from ITT Engineered Valve Company in Lancaster. He was a longtime member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Red Lion where he was also a member of the Christian Adult SS Class for 70 years. Tom was a Master Mason with the Free and Accepted Masonic Lodge, #649 in Red Lion, receiving his 25-year pin. He held life memberships with several organizations in Red Lion, the Red Lion American Legion Post #543, Red Lion Fire Company, and the Viking Athletic Club. He enjoyed watching Penn State Football and the Baltimore Orioles baseball. He and Kay always enjoyed traveling to Florida during the winter months with friends and family. He was a United States Army Veteran.
He is survived by a son, Thomas S. Smeltzer of York, and three stepchildren, Randy D. Druck and his friend (Gretchen) of Bellefonte, PA, Kimberly A. Burdette and husband Robert of York and Tamie S. Johnson and husband Jeffrey of York. He was the loving grandfather of twelve grandchildren, Jessica Fazekas (Jim), Jason Hager, Jennifer Stambaugh (Chad), Randy Druck, Jr., Jamy Long, Keith Burdette, Jordan Johnson, Cole Johnson, Sydnie Johnson, Paige Smeltzer, and Taylor Smeltzer, and eight great grandchildren. He was the brother of four siblings, Barbara Hively and husband Glenn of York, Stanley Smeltzer and wife Vi of Seven Valleys, Steven Smeltzer of York and Kent Smeltzer and wife Robin of Red Lion, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Viewing will be on Wednesday, August 12th, from 10-11 am at Bethany United Methodist Church, 121 W. Broadway, Red Lion. A Service of Honor and Praise for Tom will begin at 11 am at church with his pastor, Rev. Ronald L. Doverspike officiating. Burg Funeral Home, Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion will be assisting with the arrangements. Burial will take place at Mt. Rose Cemetery with flag folding ceremony offered by the York County Veterans Honor Guard.
