Gwendolyn Glee (Grove) Hildebrand of Stewartstown closed her eyes and accepted her Lord and Savior's hand, to life eternal, at 4:52 am on July 24, 2021, at Wellspan York Hospital at the age of 79. She was the loving wife of Gabriel E. Hildebrand of Stewartstown, to whom she married on February 18, 1961, celebrating 60 years together.
Gwen was born in York on July 4, 1942 and was the daughter of the late Elmer B. "Butch" and Eleanor L. (Stein) Grove. She graduated from Red Lion High School Class of 1960 as an Honor Student and then went on to receive her Histology Certificate. She worked at Wellspan York Hospital as a Hystologic Technologist where she was the supervisor for ten years, prior to her retirement from full time work in 2002, but continued to work part time, as needed. After retirement, Gwen volunteered in the nursery, as a baby cuddler, a job that she truly loved. She and Gabe rode a motorcycle, traveling to 48 states. Gwen loved to go on cruises and was very talented with arts, crafts, and ceramics. In earlier years, when Gabe's job required moving to Easton, she volunteered in a nursing home as the activity's director. Gwen was a longtime and active member of Winterstown United Methodist Church, where she faithfully sang in the choir, (she was a member of choir everywhere they lived, from York County, to Easton, Carlisle and then back to York County), Gwen taught Sunday School, she oversaw the Alter Guild and assisted in the nursery. Her most important role in her earthly life was taking care of her husband, her sons and family as it grew in number over the years.
She leaves her husband, Gabe, along with three sons, Chad A. Hildebrand and his wife Denice of Ramsay, IL, Brian E. Hildebrand of York and Troy D. Hildebrand and his wife Julie of Red Lion. She was the loving grandmother of six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Gwen was the sister to Keith A. Grove and his wife Dorinda of New Freedom and aunt to two nieces and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Bret W. Hildebrand on August 11, 2010, and her brother, Terry G. Grove on October 26, 2020.
