Helen Romaine (Mundis) Markel, of York, entered into rest on Monday, March 10, 2025, at UPMC – York at the age of 97. She was the devoted wife of the late Ernest Edward Markel, who preceded her in death on March 8, 2004.
Born on November 5, 1927, in Red Lion, Helen was the daughter of the late Mark D. Sr. and Lottie (Smeltzer) Mundis. She dedicated her career to caring for others and retired from York Hospital in 1985 after serving as a nurse. Helen found great joy in gardening and traveling, and she was a faithful member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Freysville.
She leaves her daughters, Linda E. Eberly and her husband, Michael, of York, and Judy A. Sherman of York. She is survived by her sister, Esther Grove and her husband, Barry, of York. Helen was preceded in death by her daughter, Kay A. Fuller, as well as her brothers, Mark, David, Curvin, and Richard, and her sister, Betty McKinley.
A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens. Wagner-Elfner and Burg Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., located at 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion, is assisting the family with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Helen's honor to Emanuel Lutheran Church, 2650 Freysville Road, Red Lion, PA 17356.
