IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James G.
Lewin
November 10, 1954 – November 26, 2024
James G. Lewin, of York, entered into rest at Wellspan York Hospital on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at the age of 70. He was the husband of Pamela J. (Huff) Lewin, whom he married on October 6, 2007, and the late Janet (Gould) Lewin who died on September 17, 2000.
Jim was born on November 10, 1954, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to the late Donald Henry and Mary Jeanne (Kriha) Lewin. He graduated from St. Francis High School and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in psychology from Assumption College in Massachusetts. Jim had a career in sales with Kodak and previously owned Image Delivery Systems in Washington, DC. He purchased the York Emporium Bookstore in 2006, which he operated until his retirement. A devoted Buffalo Bills fan since 1966—by his own proud declaration — Jim was passionate about Bills' football but also loved reading, books and collecting. He was an enthusiastic reader with a wide range of interests and collected everything from Star Trek and Beatles memorabilia to historical artifacts and signed books. In addition to his many hobbies, Jim was an accomplished writer, as he and his wife authored several books for the Smithsonian. The love of his life was the York Emporium. From selecting the books, adding just the right decoration or telling the story of the magic Christmas tree, Jim created his idea of the perfect bookstore and shared it with all who visited.
Besides his wife, Jim leaves his daughters, Christine M. Leventhal and husband, Matthew of Norwalk, CT, Johanna M. Smith and husband, Elmer of Marblehead MA, and Katrina D. Lewin of Nashua, NH. He leaves his grandsons, Ethan James and Nathaniel Martin, both of Marblehead, MA. He will be missed dearly by his brothers, Richard G. Lewin and wife, Katherine of Carmichael, CA, Daniel G. Lewin and wife, Katherine of Redwood City, CA, and Donald G. Lewin of Guerneville, CA, as well as his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his infant sister, Mary Jo.
A Celebration of Life for Jim will take place on Sunday, December 15, 2024, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the Wyndham Garden York, 2000 Loucks Road, York, PA 17408. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Wagner-Elfner and Burg Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion, is assisting the family with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jim's memory may be offered to the York Literacy Institute, 1416 6th Avenue, York, PA 17403.
