Margaret Genevieve "Peggy"
Powlas
Jun 17, 1936 — Jul 28, 2026
York, PA
Margaret Genevieve "Peggy" Powlas, age 90, of York, formerly of Arlington, VA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 28, 2026. Born in Alexandria, VA, she was the daughter of the late Robert S. and Erma (Chichester) Jefferson. She was the devoted wife of the late Luckey L. Powlas, who preceded her in death on March 30, 2026.
Peggy worked for many years in the payroll department for the former Bon-Ton Department Stores. She and Luckey were founding members of Temple Baptist Church in York (now Freedom Biker Church). Her faith was an important part of her life, and she was very active in the church, teaching Sunday School and Bible School. She was also a dedicated member of the Red Lion Area Senior Center, where she enjoyed fellowship and friendship with many.
Peggy enjoyed crafts such as sewing, crocheting, and quilting. She loved spending time in her garden and canned many of the vegetables she grew. She enjoyed traveling and was especially grateful for the trip she took to Ireland with her sisters and the Alaskan cruise she took with the Gaither Vocal Band. Above all, Peggy treasured time with her family and created many happy memories that will be cherished for years to come.
Peggy is survived by her daughter, Kathryn A. Mansberger (Melvin); her son, Thomas Powlas (Karen); her brothers, Danny Jefferson and Bobby Jefferson; her sister, Janice Jefferson; two grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Virginia, James, and Jean.
A celebration of Peggy's life will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at Freedom Biker Church, 2550 Pine Grove Road, York. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until the time of service. A time of fellowship and continued remembrance of Peggy will follow the service in the church social hall. Interment will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, in Oakwood Cemetery, 401 North Roosevelt Street, Falls Church, VA.
