Mariel "Mari" "Patty" Ann (Munro) Childress, Martin, Penoyer, formerly of Red Lion and Dallastown, closed her eyes and accepted the hand of her Lord and Savior on Sunday, November 13, 2022, from her residence, surrounded by her loving family, at 7:14 pm at the age of 87. She was the loving wife of Robert C. Penoyer to whom she married on August 15, 1993, bringing together two families, united by love, celebrating 29 wonderful years together.
Mari was born in Pittsburgh, on December 8, 1934 and was the daughter of the late Alexander H. and Margaret I. (Sible) Munro. She graduated from Clearfield High School Class of 1952 and went on to college, earning her degree from Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, Texas. Mari worked for many years at the York County Children and Youth Services as a private adoption investigator and retired as a supervisor. She was a long-time member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Red Lion, a member of the Elizabethtown Chapter Order of The Eastern Star #407, and Dr. J.M. Hyson Memorial Court #106 Order of the Amaranth in Red Lion. She was a former board member of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) and served on the board of directors of the former Red Lion County Club. Mari served as a secretary of the Woman of York County Amateur Golf Association. Above all else, Mari's family was the most important in her busy life. She put them first and loved spending time with all of them.
Besides her husband Bob, she leaves eleven children, Gary Childress and his wife Donna of Dallastown, and their children, Stephanie (Corbin) Rinehart, and Jeffrey Childress (Holly), Susan Evans and her husband Tom of York, and their children, Jennifer Evans (Bryan Clancy) and Rich Evans, David Childress and his wife Jessie of York, and their children, Stacy Misner, Ashley (Guy Fulton), Alecia Childress, Megan Zelinske (Michael), Peggy Filizzi and her husband Jim of Columbia, and their children, Laura Blackwood (Joe) and Brian Filizzi, John Childress and his wife Jill of Red Lion, and their children Molly and Jonathan Childress, and Mary Jones and her companion Kent Wasser of Annapolis, MD, and Mary's children Michael Jones (Kerstin ) and Brittany Jones, R. Scott Penoyer and his wife Meryl of Amesbury, MA, and their son, Jonathan Penoyer (Kaelin), Brad Penoyer and his wife Katie of Clearfield, and their children, Addison and Avanelle Penoyer, Douglas Penoyer and his wife Kelly of DE, and their children, Charles and Jacob Penoyer, Darren Penoyer and his companion Paul of Buffalo, NY and Andrea Stahl of Bradford, PA. and her children, Rebecca and Eric Stahl. All together, including spouses, Mari was the doting grandmother of twenty-three grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren , Carson, Jack, Paige, Autumn, Lucy, Landen, Huxley, Hunter, Sophia, Liliana, Aaliyah, Aubree, Connor, Evan, Chloe, Charliemae and Julianna. Mari also leaves nieces and nephews and her very loving and special companion, her dog Sandy. She was preceded in death by her twin grandsons, Alexander Kerr and Andrew Barry Childress in 1994, and her two sons-in-law, Charles Jones, and BJ Stahl, along with her brother, Alexander H. Munro, Jr. and her sister, Margaret Munro.
Family and friends are invited to attend the viewing for Mari on Friday, November 18th, from 6-8 pm at Burg Funeral Home, Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion. A service to celebrate Mari's love for the Order of The Eastern Star will begin at 7:45 pm, presented by the members of the Keystone Eagles Club, of which Mari was a member. A Service to Honor and Praise Mari will be on Saturday, November 19th, at 10 am at Bethany United Methodist Church, 121 W. Broadway, Red Lion with a viewing from 9 to 10 am at the church. Burial will follow the service at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mari may be offered to: Grand Chapter of Pennsylvania, Order of The Eastern Star, Inc., 105 Freemason Drive, Elizabethtown, PA 17022.
