Mary "Louise" (McDaniel) Godfrey, 97, passed away on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at Country Meadows.

She was the wife of the late Gerald Godfrey.

Louise was born in York Township on June 10, 1928, the daughter of the late William Claude and Minnie (Flinchbaugh) McDaniel.

She graduated from York High School, Class of 1946. Her parents were the founders of Mack's Ice Cream, where she worked at their shop in Spry before opening Godfrey's Ice Cream in Red Lion with her husband. It wasn't long before Louise started adding her own homemade soups and sandwiches to the menu. Though running a business kept them busy, Louise and her husband always made time on Monday afternoons to go fishing on the Chesapeake Bay. She also enjoyed fishing trips to the Florida Keys and Delaware Bay, as well as spending time in the mountains.

Louise is survived by three children: Linda A. Zeigler and husband Curt of Red Lion; Debra M. Frey and husband Chuck of New Cumberland; and Michael "Mike" A. Godfrey and wife Zoe of York. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and five siblings: Bill McDaniel and wife Rosemary of Florida; Phyllis "Shorty" Scheffman of Lancaster; Susie Myers of York; JoAnn McCubbin of York; and Carolyn Ream and husband Tom of Delaware. In addition, she is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by three siblings: James McDaniel, Flo "Dolly" Myers, and David "Butch" McDaniel.

A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, July 21, 2025, at Wagner-Elfner and Burg Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion. A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m., with Chaplain John-Michael Pickens officiating. Burial will follow in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens.

Louise's family would like to extend a special "Thank you" to the staff at Country Meadows, especially the personal care team, for all of their love, care, and attention given to her over the years; and to the staff at Lifesong Hospice for all of their wonderful help.
