Obituary

Mary E. (Miller) Torbert, of York, died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Friday, October 18, 2024, at the age of 69 after a brief and courageous fight against cancer.

She was born in York on December 11, 1954, to Francis D. and Minnie E. (Kohler) Miller. She graduated from Red Lion High School and began her working life at Flinchbaugh's, before embarking on a long career at Harley Davidson, where she was employed until her retirement in 2010.

Mary was actively engaged in her community and was especially proud of her involvement with the Brogue Jaycees. Her dedication to the organization earned her the Special Lady Award in 1998, as well as the Angel Award in both 2000 and 2001. She was also a member of the local IAM 175 union and volunteered her time with Heartland Hospice, demonstrating her commitment to service and helping others. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

In her personal life, Mary found joy in a variety of activities. She loved playing Chicken Foot Dominoes, enjoyed golfing on 9-hole courses, and, most importantly, cherished the time she spent with her family.

She leaves her son, Derrick J. Miller of York, her brother, George L. Miller and wife, Lucy of Felton, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her lifetime partner, Steven G. Berger who died on October 13, 2007, as well as her brothers, David F. Miller (February 25, 1969), Curran D. Miller (February 11, 2007), Robert E. Miller (October 19, 2010), and her infant grandson, Deion Miller (December 1, 1994).

A viewing for Mary will take place on Friday, October 25, 2024 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Wagner-Elfner and Burg Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion. A funeral service will begin at 11:00 am with Rev. Steven A. Schmuck of Red Lion Bible Church officiating. Burial will follow in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens.
