Melissa "Mel" A. (Cottrell) Dean, of Red Lion, accepted the hand of her Lord and Savior on Friday, September 10, 2021, at 8:29 pm, surrounded by her loving family at the age of 51. She was the wife of Richard "Rick" L. Dean, Jr. of Red Lion to whom she married on April 23, 1990, celebrating 31 years together.
She was born in Baltimore, Maryland on March 28, 1970 and was the daughter of John P., Cottrell, II and step mother, Laurie (Burke) of Norfolk, VA, and Judy A. (Behlert) Cox and step father, Fred, of Seaford, DE. Mel graduated from Kenwood High School Class of 1988. She enjoyed going camping, shopping, horseback riding, decorating, going to FL and to the beach, especially Assateaque Island, traveling and had a love for animals. But nothing was more precious to her than to spend time with her daughter and husband and family.
Melissa and Rick have a daughter, Samantha A. Dean of Red Lion and her two dogs, Max, and Apollo. She has six siblings, John P. Cottrell, III of Baltimore, MD, Justin P. Cottrell of Norfolk, VA, Courtney A. Hamill (Seth) of Hellam, Lindsey Buchardt (Zachary) of Virginia Beach, VA., Logan Corvello of Virginia Beach, VA, and Ryan Corvello (Katie) of Alexandria, VA. She is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Melissa leaves her mother-in-law, Sharon (Porter) Dean of Red Lion, and her seven brother and sister-in-laws, Barbara Dean of Red Lion, George Dean of Red Lion, Charles Dean (Lucy) of Gettysburg, David Dean of Boston, MA., Cheryl Thomas (Chris) of Hanover, Beverly Uhlman (Gary) of MD and Rosemary Lancaster (Billy) of MD. She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Richard L. Dean, Sr.
Viewings for Mel will be on Wednesday, September 15th from 3 to 5 pm and 7 to 9 pm, and on Thursday, September 16th, from 10-11 am at Burg Funeral Home, Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion. A Service of Honor and Praise for Melissa will begin at 11 am at the funeral home with Rev. David D. Tietje, pastor of St. John's United Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be private at Winterstown EV Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
