Mildred J. (Haynes) Smith, of Windsor, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at 7:15 am at her daughter's residence at the age of 79. She was the wife of Kenneth W. Smith, Sr. to whom she married on October 16, 1960, celebrating 57 years together.
She was born in York on May 8, 1939 and was the daughter of the late Charles W.L. and Vallie (Fuhrman) Haynes. She was a practical nurse, worked at Greens Dairy, Yorktowne Ice-cream, Tasty Snack, Goodling's Orchard, and was recently working for the Red Lion Area School District as a crossing guard in Windsor. She was a member of the Windsor Fire Company #37, where she was not only a member but also a firewoman, going right in to burning buildings alongside of her male counterparts. She attended Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. She enjoyed camping, gardening and making blankets to give to others to brighten their days. But most of all, she loved her family and spending time with them.
Besides her husband, Kenneth, she leaves three children, Kenneth W. Smith, Jr. and his wife Debbie of Windsor, Bonnie L. Scott and her husband James of New Bridgeville, and Sonja L. Keener and her husband Michael, Sr. of New Bridgeville. She was the grandmother to ten grandchildren, Scott, Summer, Jasmine, Jessica, Amanda, Robert, Sebastian, Stone, CJ, and Michael, and seven great grandchildren, Hayden, Jade, Hunter, Scottie, Jaysin, Zach, and Destiny. Mildred leaves her twin sister, Margaret Swords of York, and sisters, Myrtle Briggs of Seven Valleys, Ruth Bare of York and Vallie Schuler of Seven Valleys along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Joshua Smith, and a great grandson, James Scott, and siblings, Arthur Haynes, Charles Haynes, and Alverta Haynes Goodling Henry.
Viewings for Mildred will be on Monday, September 10th from 6-8 pm and Tuesday, September 11th, from 9-10 am at Burg Funeral Home, Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion. A Service of Honor and Praise for Mildred will begin at 10 am at the funeral home with her pastor, Rev. Terry Robinson officiating. Burial will be at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens.
Mildred gave so much of her time serving and helping others in various ways, but most of all to the fire company. It is only fitting that she be transported to her final resting place on a firetruck and be remembered on September 11th, the day we honor and pray for all first responders.
