Obituary

Pauline Mae (Spangler) McWilliams died at her home, surrounded by family members, at the age of 99. She was the daughter of the late Lester and Goldie (Diehl) Spangler of York, PA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Burnell, with whom she enjoyed 69 years of marriage; a sister, Nellie Spangler of York; three daughters, Sandra, Beverly, and Cynthia McWilliams; and two sons, Thomas and David McWilliams (all of York, PA). She was also preceded in death by two grandsons, Thomas McWilliams of York, PA, and Gregory McWilliams of Florida.

Pauline was lovingly referred to by many names throughout her life: Peanie, Mom, Grandma, MawMaw, Wife, Sister, and Sugar. Her family and God meant the most to her throughout her nearly 100 years of life. She was a master of crocheting and, as an expression of her love, gave her beautiful creations to friends and family members at family reunions, Christmas, and other special occasions. Many of her family and friends would receive a crocheted snowflake in their Christmas card every year. She crocheted her last afghan in June 2024, at the age of 99.

Pauline loved to travel with her husband. They visited New Zealand, Australia, Israel, Aruba, and Canada, went on cruises, and visited relatives in various states. One of her favorite places to visit was Williamsburg, Virginia, where she and various family members traveled yearly for many decades. Her home was filled with lighthouses, which, to Pauline, represented the Christian symbolism of guidance, hope, salvation, and the reflection of God's love and presence in her life.

Pauline was a fantastic cook and baker. Her pies, cakes, and Christmas cookies were praised by all. She had a lifelong love of reading, which she shared with all her children. She enjoyed board games, puzzles, and weekly card games at her mother's house with extended family members. She loved music, played her guitar, and sang hymns and country songs. After her passing, the family discovered a beautiful recording of her singing hymns and other songs while playing her guitar—something previously unknown to them. In addition to her immediate family, she enjoyed visiting with her many cousins at monthly luncheons.

Pauline is survived by five children: Barry McWilliams of Seattle, WA; Judy McWilliams of Shelburne Falls, MA; Stephen McWilliams of York, PA; Jon McWilliams and his wife, Caroline, of Lititz, PA; and Dan McWilliams of York, PA. She is also survived by two sisters, Evelyn Swanson and Jacqueline King, both of York, PA. Additionally, she is survived by her precious grandchildren: Yvonne, Kim, Dena, Jesse, John, Kyle, Andrea, Chad, Amy, Angie, Shawn, Kris, Dan, and Tara. She is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Pauline was a longtime member of Arlington Evangelical Congregational Church, 585 Lombard Road, Red Lion, PA 17356. A Celebration of Life will be held at her church on August 9, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. A reception will follow at the church after the service.

Donations can be made in her memory to her church or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (www.stjude.org), or Easterseals (www.easterseals.com), or The Salvation Army (www.salvationarmyusa.org).
