Godfrey

Richard E. Godfrey, age 96, of East Prospect and Richmond, passed away peacefully at Normandie Ridge on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. Born in York Township on August 2, 1928, he was the son of the late Norman P. and Marie (Floyd) Godfrey, and the stepson of the late Irene (Waughtel) Godfrey. He was the loving husband of the late Velma (Craley) Godfrey, who passed in 1973, and later of the late Gloria B. (McClane) Godfrey, who passed in 2000.
Richard graduated from Red Lion High School in 1945. He worked as a production inventory scheduler for the former Teledyne McKay, retiring in 1988. A few years later, he joined the team at Barry's Country Food Market in Craley, where he worked well into his late 80s.
A member of St. Luke Church of Felton since 1950, Richard was active in church life as a choir member and council member. He was a familiar face at the church's summer picnics, often found running the hamburger stand with care and pride. He also dedicated many years to St. Luke's Cemetery Association, serving as secretary for four decades.
Richard was a member of the Canadochly Valley Ambulance Association. In his free time, he enjoyed cheering on the Orioles, pitching horseshoes in local leagues, and fishing and crabbing in Ocean City, MD, and Stone Harbor, NJ.
He is survived by his son, Donald Godfrey, and his wife, Nancy; his daughter, Lucinda Shenberger, and her husband, Terry; his stepdaughters, Linda Hennel, Diane Fanruther, and Karen Shepherd; his brother, James Godfrey, and his wife, Connie; and his sister, Violet Harrison. He is also survived by four grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, many step great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Charlotte Bahn and Mary Arnold.
A celebration of Richard's life will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at St. Luke Church, 2666 Furnace Road, Felton, with Deaconess Joy Hovis officiating. Interment will follow in the adjoining cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday from 10:00am until the time of service.
