YORK Richard "Dick" J. Kahler, 96, formerly of Red Lion entered into rest after a lengthy illness on Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at 1:25 a.m. at Pleasant Acres Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, York. He was the husband of Henrietta (Heikes) Kahler, whom just entered into rest on May 8, 2011. Born in York on March 30, 1915, he was the son of the late Charles D. and Esther V. (Shellenberger) Kahler. He was a maintenance man at the former Cole Steel in York. he retired from the former AMF of York where he worked as a night watchman. He worked on a cowboy ranch in Wyoming breaking horses and served in the Spanish Civil War from 1937-1938 obtaining the rank of Captain in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. Richard loved to read and help others in any way that he could. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Brogue where he served as a good witness in his church. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by four daughters, Charolette L. Buckingham of Red Lion and husband, Donald E., Julia E. Kinard of York, Colleen J. Fitzsimmons of Cleveland Tenn., and Cynthia M. Herbst of Columbia and husband, John; two sons, Samuel R. Kahler of York and Luke A. Kahler of Airville; 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, James M. Kahler in 1942. Viewings will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 to 10 a.m. at Burg Funeral Home, Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion. The service will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Randy J. Starr, pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Brogue, officiating. Burial will be at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens.
