Obituary

Richard H. McCleary, formerly of Dallastown, went to his eternal home on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, from York South Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at the age of 92. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara J. (Shaud) McCleary, who died on December 8, 2019.

Born in York on January 25, 1932, Richard was the son of the late Charles F. and Mary Jane (Fisher) McCleary. He left school at a young age to support his family and went on to build a long career, first in farming, then with the former Pennfield Corporation until his retirement at age 65. He continued to stay active by working part-time at The Mill of Red Lion until the age of 80.

Richard had a deep appreciation for the simple joys in life. He spent countless hours watching classic westerns, relaxing on his swing while watching the dogs play, and enjoyed wrestling matches. A true music lover, he cherished listening to his collection of 78s, 45s, and 8-track tapes. He also found joy in puzzle books and adored spending time with his "grand dogs". Richard was a 70+ year member of Salem Martinsville Community Church.

He leaves his sons, Gregory S. McCleary and wife, Carol of Red Lion, and Brian E. McCleary and fiancé, Lynne Murphy of Dallastown. He leaves his three granddaughters, Sara McCleary of Red Lion, Megan Robinson and husband, Justin of Windsor, and Briana McCleary of Lebanon, his great-grandsons, Hunter Liller and Colton Robinson, and his great-granddaughters, Mikaela Robinson and Marissa Liller. Richard leaves his brothers, Dale Fisher of Craley and John McCleary and wife, Josie of Yorkana. He leaves his sisters, Jane Ann Smeltzer of East Prospect, Susie Lightner of Dallastown, Mary Fae Lewis of Allentown, and Janet Freed and husband, Jay of Yorkana. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Stephanie McCleary, his brother, Jesse Donald McCleary, and his sisters, Ruth Deckman, Norma Keller, Thelma Sowers, and Alice Stiffler.

A viewing for Richard will take place on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, from 6-8 pm at Wagner-Elfner and Burg Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc. 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion, and again at the funeral home on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, from 11 am to 12 pm. A funeral service will begin at 12 pm with Pastor Laura Holtzapple of Pleasant Waters Charge officiating. Burial will follow the service in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens.

The family would like to thank the nurses at York South for the wonderful care they gave to Richard.
