Obituary

Richard "Joe" E. Smallwood, of Dover, went to his eternal home on Monday, January 13, 2025, at the age of 83. He was the husband of the late Jolene L. (Markey) Smallwood, who died on March 5, 2009.

Joe was born in Hellam on November 11, 1941, to the late James D. Sr. and Ida M. (Case) Smallwood. A graduate of Eastern High School, he dedicated more than 40 years of his professional life as a machine operator at Yorktown Papermill. Outside of work, Joe found great enjoyment in spending time at Codorus Park, where he frequently went boating. He loved his sailboat and had a passion for cars and all things automotive. In earlier years, Joe cherished camping trips with Jolene at Flo-de-on, where they created countless memories together. He especially treasured quiet moments spent by the campfire. Joe attended Lighthouse Baptist Church and was formerly a member of Church of the Open Door.

Joe is survived by his son, Darren E. Smallwood, of Dover; his son-in-law, James A. Bennett, of Spring Grove; and his sister-in-law, Karen S. Spangler and husband, Robert, also of Spring Grove. He leaves behind his grandson, Alex Bennett, of Spring Grove; and his granddaughters, Jenna Smallwood, of Germany, and Emily Smallwood, of King of Prussia. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Dorene L. Bennett; his brothers, Edward, James Jr., Robert, and Charles Smallwood; and his sisters, Etta Warner, Helen Miller, and Naomi Astor.

A viewing for Joe will take place on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Wagner-Elfner and Burg Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion, starting at 9:00 a.m. A funeral service will follow at 10:00 a.m., with Pastor Frank Miller, Sr. of Faith EC Church officiating. Burial will follow the service in Shenbergers Chapel Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Cancer Care of York, 25 Monument Rd, Suite 294, York, PA 17403.
