Obituary

Ruth Ann (Hippel) Burke, 68, entered into rest after a battle with breast cancer on Friday, August 29, 2014, at her residence. She was the wife of Palmer L. Burke, whom she married on January 31, 1971. She was born in Pottstown, on November 26, 1945, and was the daughter of the late Rev. George and Mary (Anderson) Hippel. Ruth ran a small rubber stamp business out of her home. She was a longtime member and church organist at Mt. Zion United Church of Christ, retiring as organist in January after 31 years of service. She also served as the church's Choir Director over the past few years. Ruth was a member of the American Guild of Organists, the Miniature Carousel Builders Club, and The Muses Harp Group in York. In addition to her husband, Palmer, Ruth is survived by her son, Stephen T. Burke and wife, Eleanor Moody of Wellfleet, Mass.; daughter,Jennifer K. Parsons and husband, Matthew of Dunbar, W.Va.; two grandchildren, Madison and Caleb Parsons; a sister, Mary Jane Hoffmaster and husband, Sterling of East Berlin; and numerous nieces and nephews. There will be no viewing. Cremation will take place with Burg Funeral Home, Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion. A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 6, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Mt. Zion United Church of Christ, 1054 Ridgewood Road, York 17406. A Memorial Service of Honor and Praise for Ruth will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church with her pastors, the Rev. Cathy H. Sherry and the Rev. Danielle Neff, officiating. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be offered to Mt. Zion United Church of Christ, 1054 Ridgewood Road, York, PA 17406; or to the Cancer Patient Help Fund, York Health Foundation, 50 N. Duke St., Second Floor, York, PA 17401. Ruth enjoyed watching the birds at their feeders. She was a wonderful wife to Palmer for 43 years and a loving mother and grandmother. She loved to sew doll clothes for her granddaughter.
