Obituary

Staff Sergeant Clifford E. Keeney, U.S. Army Air Forces, age 26, of York Township, gave his life in service to his country on Friday, September 13, 1944, after the B-17 Flying Fortress Mag the Hag, the 2nd, on which he served as the top turret gunner, was shot down while on their sixteenth mission under the command of Lieutenant General Jimmy Doolittle, near Neustadt, Thuringen, Germany. His remains were discovered in 1991, carefully excavated in 2008, and finally identified through familial DNA on June 12, 2025.

Born at home on Mackerel Hill Road in York Township on February 17, 1918, Clifford was the beloved son of the late Clarence Samuel and Mamie Matilda (Hengst) Keeney.  He is survived by two nephews Greg and Jeff Keeney and one niece Bonnie McClure.

All are invited to honor Clifford's long-awaited homecoming on Friday, November 28, 2025, at 12:00 noon in Christ Church Cemetery, located behind Smith Village in Jacobus. After 81 years, he will be laid to rest beside his mother and father—and, at long last, be home.

Clifford believed in keeping the honor and faith of his God, family, and the United States of America.  A true Hero.
