Sue E. Reinecke was born September 19, 1936, at her grandparents' home in Airville,PA with Dr. Joseph Atkins attending. She passed from life to life eternal on Thursday, September 1, 2022, at 7:12 am at SpiriTrust Lutheran Village at Shrewsbury, at the age of 85.
She went to school for 7 years at the Airville, PA one-room schoolhouse until the Lower Chanceford School was completed. She attended high school four years at the Lower Chanceford High School. After high school she enrolled at Millersville University and graduated in 1958 with a bachelor's degree. She became a teacher in Central York School District teaching first and second grades for 35 years. While teaching, she continued her education by attending Penn State evening classes and summer school and ended with 47 credits beyond her Master's Degree.
In 1993, she retired as a public school teacher but continued Sunday school teaching at McKendree United Methodist Church in Airville for a total of 38 years. While teaching at public school and Sunday school, she arranged and decorated many bulletin boards adding bouquets of garden flowers into the arrangements of children's work. She also added flowers for the holidays at church and school.
At McKendree, she was Secretary of the junior choir and taught Sunday school, member of the senior choir, and President of United Methodist Women for 5 years. She arranged flower vases for special occasions like picnics, festivals, and weddings. She loved to grow and share her flowers with anyone that wanted or needed them. She baked cakes and decorated them for free for birthdays, weddings and parties whenever anyone asked her to do so.
At home on the farm, owned by her grandmother, Margaret M. Reinecke, and her parents, Henry J. and Sue (Trout) Reinecke, she helped to cook for the hired men; raised llamas, goats, peacocks, turkeys, chickens, guinea pigs, and rabbits. She also helped to maintain the vegetable gardens, flower gardens and fruit orchards. Her freezer was always full, from growing things on the farm and canning tomatoes, peaches, cherries, grapes, and pears.
In 1972, when her father died, she continued caring for the farm land by shoveling out mustard weed and bull thistles beginning in May until the job was completed walking the fields even after school until dark. She stopped her work to help her family members whenever they needed an extra hand.
In her vegetable garden she raised sweet potatoes, sweet corn, lima beans, string beans, okra, Kennebec potatoes, parsley, dill, squash and melons. She enjoyed raising large patches of strawberries, Concord grapes, elderberries, quince, peaches, apples, and pears.
She contributed flowers and baked goods to the Mason Dixon Fair winning many blue ribbons and sometimes, "Best of Show for Angel Food Cake." She was a board member of the Conservation Society of York County, life member of the National Education Association (NEA), and life member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA). Her greatest hope was for everyone to live in harmony with each other and to care for the land for future generations.
Suie, as she is fondly known by many, was preceded in death by her sister, Dr. M. Louise Reinecke, who entered into rest on April 16, 2017. She leaves to cherish her memory, her very special friends and caregivers for years, Eric and Jamie Jordan of Airville and their children, Hunter, Riley and Grace along with her cousins.
