Susan Gay (Hixson) Ashby, 76, died peacefully on Wednesday, August 5, 2026 at Pappus House after a courageous battle with cancer. She was the beloved wife of Kerry A. Ashby, celebrating nearly 47 years of marriage together.
Susan was born in New Kensington, PA on November 15, 1949, daughter of the late Vernon C. and Margaret H. (Hoak) Hixson. Susan was also preceded in death by her former sister-in-law, Visitacion "Vicky" Hixson, who remained a cherished part of her life.
Susan was baptized Catholic and proudly dedicated 21 years of her life to service in the United States Army, retiring as an E-7 after a distinguished military career. She served during two wars and was honored with numerous medals and ribbons, including the Good Conduct Medal with Bronze Clasp, National Defense Service Medal, Expert Badge Rifle M16, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, and Army Achievement Medal. Following her retirement from the Army, Susan worked for several years at Pfaltzgraff. She was a smart, fierce, independent, and selfless woman who cared deeply for her family and always put others before herself. In her free time, Susan enjoyed reading, crafting, watching British murder mysteries and dramas, and spending time with her family. She also had a love for politics, John Wayne, and classic movies. Susan’s strength, loyalty, and generous spirit will be remembered and cherished by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Erin M. Ashby and Amanda A. Strine and her husband, Adam; three grandchildren, Dylan T. Kahler, Hunter R. Amsbaugh, and Margaret L. Amsbaugh; and two brothers, David W. Hixson and his wife, Rebecca and Ronald C. Hixson and his wife, Toni.
A viewing will be held on Monday, August 17, 2026 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Wagner-Elfner and Burg Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 3070 Cape Horn Road, Red Lion immediately followed by a funeral service. Burial and military honors will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, 60 Indiantown Gap Road, Annville.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the caring staff of Pappus House for the compassion, dignity, and comfort they provided to Susan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Susan's memory may be made to Pappus House, 66 Big Mount Rd., Thomasville, PA 17364.
Susan loved color – especially red. In honor of her, the family invites those attending her services to wear a color that reminds them of Susan or brings a little brightness to the day.
