IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Walter H.
Hughes, Jr.
July 15, 1944 – June 17, 2024
Walter H. Hughes, Jr., husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and dedicated community leader, passed away on June 17, 2024, at the age of 79.
Walter was born on July 15, 1944, in Philadelphia. He was married at 18 - 6/8/1963. Walter was a father to his three children, Andrew, Donna, and Bernadette, and took great pride in his role as a grandfather to five grandchildren, Angel, Samantha, Anastasia, Katrina and Nyssa, and two great-grandchildren, Penelope and Neil.
Walter's life was marked by service and leadership. He dropped out of high school and joined the Marine Corps at 17, embodying courage and patriotism throughout his military career. Upon returning home to Pennsylvania, he continued his education, eventually obtaining an Associates Degree. Walter continued his service to the community as a police officer, rising to the level of Chief where he upheld justice and ensured the safety of those he swore to protect. His dedication extended further as he pursued a career as a barber, after retiring from law enforcement, where he not only shaped hair but also touched the lives of many with his attention to detail and personal appearance. Walter's commitment to public service culminated in his tenure as Mayor of Red Lion, Pennsylvania, where his leadership and vision left an indelible mark on the town he loved. He was awarded the Catherine Meyer Award for outstanding commitment and service to his community.
Walter was always participating in innovations such as overseeing the affirmative action program when he was a sergeant and teaching new police officers about domestic violence at the academy. He was also a firearms instructor, something he loved doing, as well as competing in shooting competitions.
Walter loved the outdoors, camping, hunting, owned horses, boating, fishing and riding his motorcycle. In 2005 he took his granddaughter, Samantha on a motorcycle ride with a sidecar through New England and up into Canada for a month. He took his grandson, Angel, on a camping canoeing trip on the Delaware River. He loved to create adventures and lived life to the fullest. Always with an eye to the future.
Walter is survived by his ex-wife, Edith Hughes, his children, his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind Tony and Krista Musso and their daughter Vivienne, beloved family friends whom he adopted as his own.
Above all else, Walter will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his community. His integrity, and work ethic touched countless lives and served as an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A memorial service to celebrate Walter's life will be held on July 13, 2024. Further information will be forthcoming. Wagner-Elfner and Burg Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion is assisting the family with arrangements.
Forever in our hearts, Walter's memory will remain a beacon of strength and adventure.
